Faith, Hope, and Love

These three virtues are central to believer’s [Christ Follower] life and theology, often mentioned together in the New Testament, especially in 1 Corinthians 13:13:

“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”

1. Faith

  • Definition: Trust and confidence in God and His promises.
  • Key Verse: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” – Hebrews 11:1
  • Role: Faith connects believers to God. It’s through faith that we receive salvation (Ephesians 2:8–9) and live in obedience to Him.

2. Hope

  • Definition: Confident expectation in God’s future promises, especially eternal life.
  • Key Verse: “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” – Hebrews 6:19
  • Role: Hope sustains believers through trials and helps them persevere, trusting in God’s goodness and future restoration.

3. Love (Agape)

  • Definition: Selfless, sacrificial, unconditional love that reflects God’s nature.
  • Key Verse: “Love is patient, love is kind… It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” – 1 Corinthians 13:4–7
  • Role: Love is the highest virtue. It fulfills God’s law (Romans 13:10) and is the mark of true discipleship (John 13:35).

In Summary:

  • Faith believes,
  • Hope anticipates,
  • Love acts.
