[YTM] 8.0 What were the promises of God about the Messiah?

As time went on, man drifted away from God. Yet, God never gave up on humanity. In His mercy, He continually reached out, saving and restoring people to Himself. Throughout history, God revealed His promises—prophecies that pointed to the coming Messiah. Below are some of those divine promises and their fulfillments in Scripture.

8.1 Promise to Eve — The First Prophecy of the Messiah

Genesis 3:15

“And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”

This was the first Messianic prophecy, revealing that the Seed of the woman would ultimately crush the serpent’s head—foretelling the victory of Christ over Satan and sin.

8.2 Promise to Abraham — Blessing to All Nations

Genesis 22:17–18

“That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the seashore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.”

This promise pointed to the Messiah who would come through Abraham’s lineage, bringing blessing and salvation to all nations.

Fulfilment:

  • Matthew 1:1 — “The book of the generation of Yeshua the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham.”
  • Galatians 3:7 — “Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.”
  • Galatians 3:29 — “And if ye be Messiah’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”

8.3 Promise through Moses — The Prophet Like unto Him

Deuteronomy 18:15

“The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken.”

The people awaited this promised Prophet. When John the Baptist began his ministry (John 1:19–23), he was asked if he was “the Prophet.” But this prophecy was fulfilled in Yeshua (Jesus).

Confirmation in the Gospels:

  • John 6:14 — “Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Yeshua did, said, This is of a truth that Prophet that should come into the world.”
  • John 7:40 — “Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet.”
  • John 5:46 — “For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me; for he wrote of me.”

8.4 Promise through the Psalms — The Universal King

Psalm 72:11

“Yea, all kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall serve him.”

This prophecy points to the Messiah’s universal reign, before whom all kings will bow and all nations will serve.

8.5 Promises through Isaiah — The Child, the Son, and the Servant

Isaiah 7:14

“Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”

Isaiah 9:6–7

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David… The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.”

Isaiah 49:6–8

“I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth… Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship… I will preserve thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth.”

Isaiah’s prophecies reveal the divine nature, universal mission, and eternal kingship of the coming Messiah—Immanuel, “God with us.”

8.6 Promise through Jeremiah — The Righteous Branch

Jeremiah 23:5–6

“Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.”

This prophecy foretells the Messiah as the righteous King from David’s line—bringing salvation, justice, and peace.

8.7 Promise through Daniel — The Everlasting Kingdom

Daniel 7:13–14

“I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven… And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.”

Daniel’s vision reveals the Messiah as the eternal Son of Man, whose kingdom will never end.

Conclusion

From the first promise to Eve to the visions of Daniel, Scripture consistently points to the coming Messiah—the Saviour, the King of kings, and the Lord of lords.
Through Him, God’s covenant promises find their perfect and eternal fulfillment.
