After returning from the region of the Gerasenes, where He had cast out many demons, Yeshua crossed back to the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, likely to Capernaum, His ministry base (Mark 5:21; Luke 8:40). The people, recognizing Him, gathered in great numbers. Amid the crowd was Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue — a respected religious leader. In desperation, Jairus came and fell at Yeshua’s feet, pleading earnestly for Him to come and heal his twelve-year-old daughter, who was near death.
This act was remarkable because Jewish religious leaders were often skeptical or even hostile toward Yeshua. Yet, Jairus’ love for his dying child overcame any social or religious barriers. His humility and faith set the tone for the miracle that would follow. Yeshua immediately agreed to go with him, surrounded by a thronging crowd pressing closely around Him.
As Yeshua made His way to Jairus’ house, another desperate soul approached Him — a woman who had suffered from a hemorrhage for twelve years. According to Jewish law, such a condition made her ceremonially unclean (Leviticus 15:25-27). She had spent all she had on physicians but only grew worse (Mark 5:26). Her condition not only caused physical suffering but also social isolation and spiritual exclusion.
Moved by faith, she said within herself, “If I only touch His garment, I will be made well.” (Matthew 9:21). She pushed through the crowd and touched the edge of Yeshua’s cloak. Immediately, her bleeding stopped, and she was healed.
Yeshua, aware that power had gone out from Him, stopped and asked, “Who touched Me?” Though the disciples were puzzled — since many were pressing around Him — Yeshua looked around until the woman came trembling and fell before Him, confessing what she had done. Yeshua tenderly said, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.” (Luke 8:48).
While He was still speaking, messengers came from Jairus’ house, saying that the girl had died. Yeshua, undeterred, told Jairus, “Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well.” (Luke 8:50). Arriving at the house, Yeshua took with Him only Peter, James, John, and the child’s parents. Amid the mourning crowd, He declared, “The girl is not dead but asleep.” They laughed in disbelief.
Yeshua took the girl by the hand and said, “Talitha koum” — “Little girl, I say to you, arise!” Immediately she rose and began to walk around. Her astonished parents were instructed to give her something to eat and to tell no one what had happened.
These two miracles together reveal the compassion, power, and divine authority of Yehsua in both public and intimate moments.
- Faith’s Power and Persistence – Both Jairus and the woman exemplify courageous faith. One approached publicly despite social standing; the other approached secretly despite shame. Yeshua responded to both with mercy.
- Yeshua’s Authority Over Disease and Death – The woman’s healing shows His mastery over chronic suffering; the raising of Jairus’ daughter proves His dominion even over death.
- Personal Relationship with the Savior – Yeshua addressed both individuals personally — calling the woman “Daughter” and gently commanding the girl to rise — revealing His tender, relational love.
- Faith Over Fear – Yeshua’s words, “Do not be afraid, only believe,” stand as a timeless call to trust Him even when hope seems lost.
Ultimately, these miracles affirm that Yeshua is the Lord of life, whose touch restores, whose word revives, and whose presence transforms despair into joyful faith.
