[MYM] 1.0 The first miracle of Yeshua the Messiah during His earthly ministry

John 2:1–12 records the first miracle of Yeshua the Messiah during His earthly ministry. The Gospel of John emphasizes the signs that reveal the divine nature and mission of Yeshua (John 20:31). At this point, Yeshua had just called His first disciples (John 1:35–51). Soon after, He attended a wedding in Cana of Galilee with His disciples on the third day (i.e. on Tuesday). The mother of Yeshua was already there in the marriage, and Yeshua and His disciples also joined the marriage ceremony. This setting provides the background for the manifestation of His glory through the transformation of water into wine.

The text opens with a wedding feast (John 2:1–2), a joyful and culturally significant occasion in Jewish society, where hospitality was highly valued. When Yeshua and His disciples wanted wine, the mother of Yeshua, informed Him of the lack, saying, “They have no wine.” Yeshua responded, “Woman, what have I to do with thee? Mine hour is not yet come” (v. 4). This reply was not harsh but signaled that His mission operated on divine timing and faith in Him, not on human urgency.

Then, His mother instructed the servants, “Whatsoever He saith unto you, do it” (v. 5), showing her faith in Him. Yeshua then commanded the filling of six waterpots of stone, used for Jewish purification rituals, with water (v. 6–7). When the ruler of the feast tasted it, the water had been miraculously turned into the finest wine (v. 9–10). The master of the feast marveled, noting the unusual practice of keeping the best wine until the end.

John 2:1–12 reveals the compassionate and glorious nature of Messiah. At a moment of potential shame, faith in Him transformed lack into abundance, showing that He is Lord over creation and the source of true joy. The passage calls believers to have faith in Him, trust His timing, obey His word, and see His glory manifested in their lives. Just as the disciples’ faith deepened through this sign, so too must ours, for “these are written, that ye might believe that Yeshua is the Messiah, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through His name” (John 20:31).

John concludes, “This beginning of miracles did Yeshua in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth His glory; and His disciples believed on Him” (v. 11). Afterwards, Yeshua went down to Capernaum with His family and disciples (v. 12).
