[CYM] 39.0 Render to God the things that are God’s

The command to “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s” is one of Yeshua’ most well-known teachings on the relationship between faith and civic responsibility. It appears in all three Synoptic Gospels:

In Matthew 22:15–22, the Pharisees and Herodians try to trap Yeshua with a political question:

Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not? But Yeshua perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.

This brilliant response, also recorded in Mark 12:13–17 and Luke 20:20–26, acknowledges both civic duty and divine allegiance. Yeshua affirms that earthly authorities have a rightful place in society (taxes, laws), but also that our ultimate loyalty belongs to God, who stamped His image on humanity—just as Caesar’s image is on the coin.

Yeshua’ command encourages believers to be law-abiding citizens, but also reminds them that God’s claims are greater and deeper, involving the whole of life and heart.

Though John does not record this event, Yeshua affirms before Pilate in John 19:11 that all earthly authority is ultimately granted by God, reinforcing the balance between honoring government and submitting to divine sovereignty.

This command challenges believers to live with integrity in both public and spiritual spheres, giving each their proper place under God’s rule.
