Throughout the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, Yeshua emphasizes that love for Him must be demonstrated through obedience to His commandments. This theme is especially prominent in His teachings about discipleship, love, and relationship with God.
In John, Yeshua speaks repeatedly and clearly: If ye love me, keep my commandments (John 14:15). This verse ties obedience directly to love, showing that genuine relationship with Messiah involves living out His teachings. He repeats,He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him (John 14:21), and, if ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love (John 15:10). The central command He gives is to love one another, as He has loved us (John 15:12), showing that love is both the motive and the content of His commandments.
In Matthew, Yeshua teaches that obedience is essential to entering the kingdom: Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven (Matthew 7:21). At the Great Commission, He instructs His disciples to make new disciples and teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen (Matthew 28:20).
Luke records Yeshua asking, why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? (Luke 6:46), urging sincerity and action. Similarly, Mark highlights that love for God and neighbor (Mark 12:30–31) fulfills the law and sums up His commandments.
Across the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, Yeshua commands that obedience is not optional—it’s the natural outflow of love, faith, and genuine discipleship.
