Yeshua frequently commanded His followers to not be afraid and to live in God’s peace, especially in the face of uncertainty, persecution, or the unknown. His words bring comfort rooted in God’s presence, provision, and power.
In the book of Matthew, Yeshua says, fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell (Matthew 10:28). He encourages fearless witness during persecution and assures believers of their worth before God. In the midst of storms—both literal and spiritual—Yeshua reassures: Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid (Matthew 14:27).
In the book of Mark, similar encouragement appears during the calming of the storm: Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? (Mark 4:40). Fear, here, is contrasted with trust in Yeshua’s divine authority over chaos.
The book of Luke records Yeshua’s saying, fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom (Luke 12:32). He urges His disciples to live generously and courageously, grounded in God’s care. At the resurrection, angels and Yeshua repeatedly say, do not be afraid. Luke 24:36–38 records,
And as they thus spake, Yeshua himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
In the books of John, it is recorded the shifts from do not fear to the gift of peace: peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid (John 14:27). After His resurrection, He greets His disciples with, peace be with you (John 20:19, 21, 26), reaffirming that His presence brings deep, abiding calm.
Across the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, Yeshua commands believers to reject fear and live in His peace, anchored in the security of God’s love and sovereignty.
